The Purpose of Safe Mode

I needed to run a scan on a netbook I suspected was infected with malware
while I was on the road. I was not in a position to run a boot time virus scan because I did not have access to a cdrom or
flash drive at the time with boot time software. What I had available was AVG and Spyware Doctor 2010 on a flash drive. The
only way you can run a good spyware scan is in safe mode due to the lack of boot time spyware scanners.
Viruses are almost impossible to remove while they are active. They are almost
always active while a system runs in normal mode. Most users run their scans on systems while they are in normal mode. Antivirus
software such as AVG and Spyware Doctor are awesome when run properly but most users defeat the strength of these suites by
running them in normal mode. The software is as strong as the most recent update but the virus eradication ability is at its
best (and the bad guys lose) when you run your scans in safe mode.
Your PC is in a volatile environment. A multitude of variable interactions occur every time you boot up your box.
Files are written, read, rearranged, and shifted on disk; programs output, input, and manipulate their data in memory; new
hardware is introduced or becomes defunct in your system. Depending on user interaction and environmental variables It's common
for your PC to be working flawlessly one minute and stubbornly defiant the next. You may boot up your computer only to get
a frozen or unresponsive desktop, or maybe you've been caught up in an endless reboot cycle or blue screen. It's a common
annoyance, and most of the time a safe mode excursion is the first step to solving the problem.
Every major version of Windows has had a Safe Mode option. But what exactly is it? Think of Safe Mode as a way to
boot up Windows using only the bare essentials It's an operating mode in Windows that bypasses all the unnecessary crud that
ordinarily gets loaded up when Windows isn't ill. Basically, it's a leaner meaner Windows. All the extra graphical capabilities
are turned off, so that even the most primitive graphics chip can power the desktop. Extraneous software drivers are bypassed
as well as all other services that aren't completely necessary to a stripped down operating system. The point of Safe Mode
is to get you into your system in the event of an emergency, opening up a window to back up your files before doing a clean
install, or to give you a virtual scaffold to see if you can fix what's wrong.
Versions of Safe Mode
7, Vista and XP have three versions of Safe Mode, giving you more leeway when something goes awry with your computer. The
first is simply labeled "Safe Mode", and this recovery mode loads the minimum set of services and device drivers
that are necessary to get you inside (the Windows OS). This version doesn't enable printer support or network capabilities.
The second mode is called "Safe Mode with Networking", and as its name implies, it does everything the first mode
does and also allows networking, giving you access to your network and the Internet (if you need to download drivers or research
a problem with Google). *The Windows firewall is launched in the background for your safety. The third version of Safe Mode
is called "Safe Mode with Command Prompt", which discards the graphical interface and drops you into a text-based
command prompt. Generally, this type of Safe Mode is only useful to system administrators (advanced Troubleshooting).
Entering Safe Mode
The easiest way to get into Safe Mode is to turn on (or restart) your computer and continuously press F8 (sometimes
it's another function key; consult your computer's manual) during the POST screen and before the Windows splash screen is
displayed. Sometimes the timing is tricky, so just keep hitting F8 repeatedly. You'll get the Windows Advanced Boot menu,
and you will be presented with options that deal with safe mode as well as booting. For now, we'll concern ourselves with
the first option in the list, Safe Mode.
Note: The text
"Safe Mode" will always appear in each corner of the screen when in this special diagnostic mode of Windows 7, Vista
If your PC is able to boot into Safe Mode, you
are in business. At the very least, you may be able to backup all your files before you lose them. You may even be able to
get your PC working normally again by using Safe Mode to get to the heart of the matter. Bear this in mind: 90% of the time,
when you can get into Safe Mode, your hardware is not to blame; it's your software that's causing the problem.
Note: This is a good place to start troubleshooting if your computer is experiencing
very serious problems and Safe Mode won't completely load. If Safe Mode freezes here, document the last Windows file being
loaded and then search the Internet for troubleshooting advice. You must log on with an account that has administrator permissions.
Fixing Problems in Safe Mode
now that you're in Safe Mode, how does one proceed? Ask yourself a few questions. Did you recently install any new software
or device drivers? If so, go through them. Perhaps a piece of malware was introduced into your computer's ecosystem when you
installed that freeware game. Maybe a shoddily written device driver is causing Windows to blue screen upon boot up. You need
to play detective and retrace your steps. After you round up the suspects, try removing the culprit--a new application, perhaps.
Rollback any suspected device drivers to their prior version. Thoroughly run an anti-virus and spyware utility ( I like AVG
and Spyware Doctor 2010).
Did you recently install any
new hardware? If Windows is failing after the introduction of a new hardware component, the crux of the problem is most likely
a buggy device driver. Sometimes a failure can be caused by installing the wrong version of device driver. Try disabling the
driver, or rolling it back, restart, and see if that helps. Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking". If the boot is
successful, then not only do you have google on your side to help you with troubleshooting, but you'll also be able to download
new drivers if you suspect that a faulty one is wrecking havoc. Also, run a Windows Update to see if there are any updates,
which may help.
Eliminate Suspected Software
Safe Mode gives you full access to the Control Panel,
so if you've recently discovered that Windows started acting up right after you installed a new application, take it it from
you system and reboot to see if that doesn't fix things. To take out programs in Windows, go to the Control Panel in the Start
Menu, select Programs and Features, search for the program in question, and choose the Uninstall option.
Turning Off Hardware Devices
If you think that a new hardware component is making waves, the best thing to do
would be to physically move the offending piece of hardware from your box. If this isn't possible, the next best thing to
do is to disable it from within Windows Safe Mode. To Windows, it is as if the hardware doesn't even exist. Go into the Start
Menu, right-click Computer, choose Properties, clicking on Device Manager. Next, find the hardware you wish to disable by
right-clicking it and selecting "disable".
all a matter of trial and error when it comes to rectifying Windows issues. Fortunately, I was able to eliminate the malware
problem I suspected ‘easily’ and identify the browser hijacker and files which were the problem. They were eliminated.
If you can boot into Safe Mode, then rest assured that you've taken the first step in finding a solution.
If I had a good Restore Point

I received a system that was infected by malware which was in a reboot loop. I logged into the bios and ran a disk
check which came back 100%. I used Ubuntu Linux (64 bit) to boot the system into normal mode (Windows Vista 64) where I was
bombarded by .exe, .dll and Symantec error messages. I backed up all data and files to an NTFS formatted flash drive and
rebooted the system, (attempting to get into safe mode) but the system hung. I booted the system back up and checked to
see if Symantec had been removed and the system noted it was removed but it was still present in the applications directory.
I downloaded Symantec removal tool and removed the remnants of (the expired) Norton Internet Security.
Security software is only as good as its last update. Security vendors need time
to add protection against emerging malware threats. Your antimalware software will not protect you from zero day or newly
launched attacks. You must keep your software up to date because infections are discovered daily. Old outdated software can
be just as hazardous as some malware. Fortunately, Symantec (Ya gotta love these guys) have addressed this problem by providing
the Symantec Removal Tool (its free).

scanner identifying and removing infections from the registry keys, registry data and 5 desktop hijackers. A Linux scanner
identified 2 media/music file infections, 2 zaza and another virus. I booted into normal mode and ran Windows update which
caused a loss of Internet Explorer.
the system and pressed F11 in an attempt to use Recovery Manager (my last resort) to repair Windows into ‘last known
good configuration’ and the system hung. I brought the corrupted Vista 64 back up again and ran ‘sfc /scannow’
from the command line and the system message read ‘could not perform operation’. The restore point either was
corrupted or never established.
Restore points can be used to restore
Windows to a previous state, before the catastrophe that struck Windows dead. System Restore does a pretty good job at creating
restore points of your Registry and system files in the event you need to restore your system to a functioning state, but
there are variables that can cause System Restore to fail when it attempts a backup. Not every remedy is obvious when System
Restore appears broken, so let's go through them to get a
better understanding of why restore point backups fail on occasion.
Inactive Task Scheduler
If your Task Schedule is disabled, System Restore won't know when to create a restore
point. Verify that your Task Scheduler is working by going to Start menu, Run, and type in "services.msc" minus
the quotes. Scroll down and locate Task Scheduler, right-clicking and selecting Properties; make sure that the Startup type
scroll down box is set to Automatic,
and hit the Start button if the Task Scheduler service isn't already running.
Low Disk Space
For System Restore to operate optimally, you'll need about 200 megabytes of hard
drive space; anything less, and System Restore won't have enough storage space to make a new restore point and will start
deleting previous backups from your hard disk. If you need to unload some space for System Restore to function comfortably,
off-load some of your hard disk's data
onto an external hard drive, flash drive or upload it to your Gmail account.
No Idle Time
Windows will only fire off System Restore when your PC is idle; so if you're constantly
doing something on your PC or it's hibernating, a restore point won't be created when triggered by Task Scheduler. Make sure
you give your PC a little idle time in order for System Restore to function properly.
System Restore: Not an Exact Science
A restore point--or backup--is not an entire backup of your Registry and system files; it's not like a zipped folder
full of files and subdirectories. Each restore point only contains the specific changes since the last backup. Bearing this
in mind, System Restore may need to utilize all restore points, taking various pieces of data from each one, to reconstruct
a cohesive, working Windows system. So, if one restore point is corrupted, then all backups are useless.
If none of your restore points can be successfully restored, delete them all and
create new ones. Shut off System restore then turn it back on. Open up the Control Panel and select the System icon. In the
System Properties dialog box, check "Turn off System Restore on all drives", clicking the Apply button to save the
changes. If you're running Windows Vista, go to the Start menu, enter sysdm.cpl, pressing enter when finished; navigate to
the Protection tab and make sure that "Local Disk C" is unchecked. Finally, select "Turn System Restore Off",
hit Apply to save the changes, and check "Local Disk C". Windows System Restore can malfunction at times. If your
restore points are not being created as expected, try the above tips to get System Restore back on track and working for you
Finally, I used Recovery Manager to restore
my clients machine back to factory settings. I patched their Vista up to date and created a new restore point. I Put Norton
Internet Security 2010 on their system with updates. Their backed up data was put back on the machine and its running fine.
Internet Explorer Under Attack

I spend a great deal of time
clicking at a web browser as Microsoft pushes security updates. I noticed my IE8 browser seemed to be running slow so I decided
to research the issue. The two recent Patch Tuesday security updates for Windows and Office Excel, came as the company
warned its users that attackers are targeting a vulnerability in Internet Explorer that can be used to hijack machines. Microsoft
issued a warning March 9 for Internet Explorer users as the company pushed out its monthly round of patches to cover security
holes in Windows and Microsoft Office Excel.
In an advisory, the company warned that a new vulnerability was being targeted in attacks against Internet Explorer 6 and 7. IE 8 is not believed to be affected. According to Microsoft, the vulnerability
is due to an invalid pointer reference being used within IE that can be exploited by tricking users into visiting a malicious
or compromised Web page.

for protection), I’m checking my Gmail, reading my Google news and managing my online assets while I’m nestled
comfortably inside my browser. While IE users modify the access control list on iepeers.dll, I don’t look back as I
speed across the net with Firefox.
Microsoft released two security bulletins March 9 for Patch Tuesday (fixing eight vulnerabilities affecting Windows and Office),
I surfed the net unimpeded with Firefoxes great security measures and robust stability. IE users prepare for successful attack
code relating to the vulnerabilities Microsoft fixed as I extend (capabilities) Firefox via user-coded extensions
(plug-ins) spicing up my installation.
Page Thumbnail Views
Internet Explorer 7 introduced
us to thumbnail views, the ability to minify all opened tabs into a
thumbnail display menu for a bird's eye-view of all
tabbed web pages. Firefox did not provide this
capability initially, but now with the assistance of Firefox Showcase, a cool extension, Firefox now trumps the Explorer in thumbnail views and options. Post installation of Showcase will Present
you with a submenu under the View menu item; configure all your view settings here.
Tweak out the display options to
your heart's content; for example, configure Firefox to display
your thumbnail views on top of Firefox or inside a new
tab. For keyboard junkies, fire off a
Shift+F12 for a big window menu or Ctrl+Alt to show them in a new tab.

4) Disable SSID Broadcast
In Wi-Fi networking, the access point or router typically broadcasts
the network name
(SSID) over the air at
regular intervals. This feature was designed for businesses and
mobile hotspots where Wi-Fi clients may come and go. In the home, this feature is
it increases the likelihood an unwelcome neighbor or hacker will try
log in to your home network.
5) Assign Static IP Addresses to Devices
Most home networkers gravitate toward using dynamic IP addresses.
This means that
the IP Address, (the IP
Address is needed to participate on a network.) is typically
assigned automatically. A dynamic IP address on an unsecure system can also supply
a hacker with a IP Address.
6) Enable MAC Address Filtering
Each piece of Wi-Fi gear possesses a unique identifier called the "physical address"
or "MAC address." Access points and routers keep
track of the MAC addresses of all
devices that connect to them. Many such products offer the owner an option to key in the
MAC addresses of
their home equipment that restricts the network to only allow
connections from those devices. Do this, but also know that the feature is not so powerful
as it may seem. Hacker software programs
can fake MAC addresses easily.
7) Turn Off the Network During Extended Periods of Non-Use
The ultimate in security measures for any wireless network
is to shut down, or turn office
your wireless access point
when you are not using. You are the most vulnerable at work
or asleep, and mischief minded people know it.
8) Position the Router or Access Point Safely
Wi-Fi signals normally reach to the exterior of a home. A small amount
outdoors is not a problem,
but the further this signal reaches, the easier it is for others
to detect and exploit. Wi-Fi signals often reach across streets and through neighboring
homes. When installing a wireless home network, the position
of the access point or
router determines it's reach. Try to position these devices near the center of the home
rather than near windows to minimize

who want their kids to use these sites safely:
Use privacy settings to restrict who can access and post on your
child's website. Some social networking sites have strong privacy

in countries around the world send countless offers via email to transfer thousands of dollars into your bank account if you
will just pay a fee or "taxes" to help them access their money. If you respond to the initial offer, you may receive
documents that look "official." But then, you will get more email asking you to send more money to cover transaction
and transfer costs, attorney's fees, blank letterhead, and your bank account numbers, among other information. Subsequent
emails will encourage you to travel to another country to complete the transaction. Some fraudsters have even produced trunks
of dyed or stamped money to verify their claims.The emails are from crooks trying to steal your money or commit identity
theft. Victims of this scam report that emergencies arise that require more money and delay the "transfer" of funds;
in the end, you lose your money, and the scam artist vanishes. According to the U.S. State Department, people who have responded
to these solicitations have been beaten, subjected to threats and extortion, and in some cases, murdered.If you receive an
email from someone claiming to need your help getting money out of another country, don't respond. After all, why would a stranger from another country pick you out at random to share thousands of
dollars? Report the solicitation to the appropriate government officials, and then hit delete.View a sample fraudulent foreign money offer.
Check Overpayment Schemes

"financial agents" to process payments for their U.S. orders; in exchange, they promise a commission.Regardless of the cover, here's what happens:
The scammer sends you a check that looks authentic — complete with watermarks — made payable for more money than
you expected. They ask you to deposit it in your bank account, and then wire-transfer some portion of the funds to a foreign
account. They provide convincing reasons why the check is for more than the necessary amount, and why the funds must be transferred
quickly. Sometimes, the counterfeit checks fool a bank teller, but be aware that the check still can bounce. The scammer vanishes
with the money you wired from your own account and you are on the hook for the entire amount of the worthless check. In addition,
a scammer who has your bank account number is likely to use it to withdraw more money from your account.
Reporting a Cross-Border Scam
If you think you may have responded to a cross-border scam, file a complaint at www.econsumer.gov, a project of 20 countries of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement
